China High School Ethics Bowl (CHSEB)
Rulebook - 2026 Pilot Edition (English)

1) Program Purpose
CHSEB is an educational competition focused on collaborative ethical inquiry.
The goal is to strengthen public reasoning, listening, and civic dialogue skills.

2) Team Composition
- Recommended team size: 3-5 students
- One coach/advisor per team
- Teams may rotate speakers during rounds

3) Round Structure
- Opening Analysis: 6 minutes
- Commentary and Questions: 8 minutes
- Open Dialogue: 6 minutes
- Closing Reflection: 2 minutes per team

4) Case Selection
- Casebook is published before the season
- Cases are real-world ethical dilemmas
- Teams prepare all cases in advance

- Ethical Analysis
- Quality of Reasons
- Dialogue Engagement
- Intellectual Humility
- Civic Discourse

6) Dialogue Norms
- Critique ideas, not persons
- Represent counterpart views accurately before critique
- Provide reasons that can be publicly examined
- Indicate when and why views may be revised

7) Tournament Flow
- Preliminary rounds
- Semifinal rounds
- Final round and public showcase

8) Fairness Rules
- Equal speaking opportunities
- No personal attacks or discriminatory remarks
- Moderators enforce timing and civility
- Judges score independently before panel discussion

9) Recommended Season Timeline
- September: casebook release and coach orientation
- October-December: school practice and regional qualifiers
- January-February: regional championships
- March: national semifinal and final rounds
